If you are curious about what light cannabis is and how to buy it in Italy, you are in the right place. As a new product made legal only by recent laws, it is still difficult to navigate the world of legal cannabis.
Specialized retailers are popping up like mushrooms, but they focus more on selling products than on providing accurate information about them. In this article, I will explain the essential information about light cannabis and where to buy it.

What is light cannabis?
For light cannabis in Italy, we refer to specific varieties of hemp in which the THC percentage is below 0.5%, so low that it has no doping effects. It should be noted that only in a few states is light cannabis considered legal, and in any case, each state has a different maximum THC threshold, ranging from 0.1% to 1%.
THC is the active substance responsible for the drug effects of marijuana, which is why a low percentage has no psychotropic effects.

The other substance that characterizes cannabis is CBD, which has no legal limit, even for light cannabis. CBD, or cannabidiol, generally has relaxing effects: it is also anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, promotes sleep, and is recommended as a relaxing agent in cases of anxiety and panic.
The positive effects of CBD are now widely studied and recognized, although some obstructionism against cannabis is evident. Considered exclusively as a medicine, many do not even accept the presence of “medical cannabis,” which is low in THC and high in CBD and is prescribed as a medication even in cases of serious illness, particularly for pain control, seizures, spasms, and sleep.
The difference between light cannabis and medical cannabis is that the latter is prescribed by doctors and recognized by the Ministry of Health (although it has not yet progressed to increase production, given the very high demand). Light cannabis, on the other hand, is sold in specialized stores or tobacco shops as “collectible products and not for combustion or inhalation.”
The vicissitudes of legal cannabis

The law n° 242 of 2016, which “establishes rules for the support and promotion of the cultivation and supply chain of hemp,” legalized cannabis with a THC content below 0.5%, and although the sale is not explicitly provided for, it does not prohibit it. Thus, since the adoption of the law, a number of points of sale specializing in hemp-based products have opened. Some chains have also emerged that today, nearly 4 years later, have managed to establish themselves in the market.
However, it was only from the beginning of 2019 that these stores, the best place to buy light cannabis, could operate calmly. In fact, after some preventive seizures and the closure of certain tobacco shops involved in the sale of light cannabis, the Supreme Court ruled on the matter. The direct sale of legal cannabis was, in a way, caused by a regulatory gap: the sale was not illegal, but it was not explicitly legal.
Thus, at the end of January 2019, the Supreme Court ruled against certain preventive seizures that corrected a misreading of law 242/16. In particular, if it is legal to cultivate legal cannabis, it is therefore also legal to sell it. Thanks to the intervention of the Supreme Court, which shed light on a new sector still seeking establishment, light cannabis retailers can now be reassured.
Where to buy legal cannabis?
If you are a fan, “collector,” or enthusiast, it hardly makes a difference: to buy legal cannabis, you have many different options.
The easiest is to go to a trusted tobacco shop, as there are many now selling it. Some, however, have decided for “personal ethics” not to sell legal cannabis: due to misinformation rather than ignorance.
If you want to be guided and advised, I suggest you visit a specialized store. Every city has at least one, and now they are even opening in smaller towns.
There, retailers can offer you many different qualities of legal cannabis, but this is just a small part of the products they sell: besides the items, which interest us less, they have many hemp sativa-based products such as food (pasta, chocolate, oil, seeds) and cosmetics.
CBD products are also plentiful: cannabis oil (high in CBD) is very famous, capable of improving various health issues.
But the big news in the legal cannabis market is the Internet!
Not sold as tobacco, but as “collectible products,” they can be marketed by the same producers online or on specialized (and very numerous) websites that host many different producers. I recommend this system to those who are already familiar with legal cannabis, as while you can allow for a variety of unimaginable products in a physical store, no seller can help or advise the customer.

Controls on legal cannabis producers and retailers are, rightly, incessant.
This is because it is an absolutely new market and due to the persistent mistrust of this plant, considered by some as a “drug” and by others as a “medicine.” However, controls have their own meaning and make an important contribution: they improve the quality of crops and the sale of products, excluding those who do not comply with the strict rules dictated by the European Union and by law 242/16.
However, as with all things, quality matters up to a point. Then the individual takes over and their use of the products or services.
For example, phones are not “bad” in themselves; they can cause problems in cases of abuse, but at that point, the fault is no longer the product but the individual. The same goes for legal cannabis: the way each of us uses this product is different, and when use becomes abusive, it can be dangerous.
It should also be remembered that cannabis, according to certain ministerial and medical criteria, can become a medicine: this means that cannabis is not bad in itself; indeed, it can also be very useful for everyday problems that are traditionally treated with much more dangerous long-term medications.
You now know where to buy it, its effects, and the things to pay attention to. Now, I can only tell you one thing: use it wisely!
